Haha, an idiot you are not. So if look directly under the comment, you'll see a label with the text "Reply." Technically not a button, actually. Just tap or click it. On my Android phone, it acts a little funky sometimes, so I have to be sure that above the comment text box there's a label in light gray text that says, "Replying to Richard North Patterson"
I have thought in the past that I was replying when I was not.
A technical note, Richard: I noticed when you replied to commenters on your previous post that you hit the general comment button instead of the "reply" button, which resulted in your replies to specific folks showing up as a "parent" comment. That can be confusing to your readers, because Substack uses a "thread" based comment system.
In other words, if you responded to someone named Marie, that comment showed up, not under Marie's comment, but as a stand-alone comment in your comment section. This means that it is possible Marie would not receive a notification that you responded, whereas if you hit "reply," she will. I hope this all makes sense!
Side note: I bought and read "Trial," and enjoyed it. I'm glad you forged ahead with it despite attempts to cancel it.
Can’t wait Ric! Say hello to Nancy… we might be looking at Thanksgiving near you. Looking forward to your meanderings! I’ve lent out my TRIAL copy to 4 of my siblings!
Thank you, Charles. I'm an idiot. Can you tell me where the reply button is? Thanks, Ric

Thank you for your absolution, Charles. I'm a slow learner, at best. But I think now I've got this right!
You do! I got the notification! Aren’t the interwebs fun? Except when they’re not?

So glad you’re writing on this Rik. Off to Common Cause board meeting tomorrow and have shared.
Thank you so much, Lenny!! If we ever needed an ethical watchdog, it's now!
