there is a great lack of history in this drivel. Germany did not exist as a nation until it was united by Prussia in about 1870. Until then it was a bunch of regions with Germanic background, some independent, some the fiefdoms of various Danish, Dutch or other European dukes, princes and such prior to the Prussian attempt to unite northern and western Europe by conquest in WWI. The same attempt had been made by the French under Napoleon in the previous century. When Napoleon was defeated there was no call for reparations. The existing heads of state in Europe were satisfied that the old ruling class of France was restored to power. When Kaiser Bill was defeated that avenue was not available so the peace treaty in which America was involved called for Germany to pay all injured governments for damage. This caused a poor economic performance in Germany including massive inflation.
My father's parents and grandparents came to Iowa from northern Germany in the 1840s and 1870s. My mother came from northern Germany to the US in 1923 and the inflation was such that Germans leaving Europe had to have their fare paid from the destination. Some of her relatives had come to the US before WWI so she had a destination. She went to work at the farm of my father's parents. Over the following years my parents helped bring her brothers and cousins to the US. One of her sisters and her parents remained in Germany. The sister's children grew up in Hitler's Germany and served in the German army. My father who was born in the US served in WWI with a company from Iowa. My oldest brother graduated from high school in 1943 and went into the army and was eventually in Italy and then in the battle of the bulge. My mother's mother was taken away from her sick bed in Northern Germany and taken to die in southern Germany in the 1930s by Hitler's government. Her father who had served in the German army before WWI was brought to the US after WWII to live with his remaining children. He told of saving his peasant's earning for some time and taking them to 'the' Jew to be investing and having his savings devalued by inflation.
There is a great lack of history in Mr. Patterson's drivel.
